Wanted: Good home for T. rex. Low maintenance. No feeding required.
What’s a dino to do when her reserve price isn’t quite met during auction?
In the case of Sampson the Tyrannosaurus rex, she’ll hang out at the Venetian until a potential owner can get his or her financial ducks in a row.
The dinosaur fossils were recently previewed at the Venetian and the auction held on Oct. 3 was declared a success by Bonhams & Butterfields’ natural history directory Tom Lindgren despite the so far non-sale of auction’s centerpiece.
The highest bid was $3.7 million dollars for what is described as the third most complete T. rex skeleton with the “finest skull” ever discovered. But even that lofty priced failed to meet the undisclosed reserve.
Still, approximately 50 other lots were snatched up for a grand total of $1.76 million and Lindgren told the Associated Press that he was confident that Samson, too, would have a new home soon.

This 17-foot-too-long-to-fit-in-the-photo fossilized fish sold for $422,000.

A pair of Einosaurus skeletons (mother and baby, we were told) sold for $440,000.

This duckbilled dinosaur fetched a record $458,000 at auction.
